What’s up you clowns welcome to the BMI merch line. This idea was first brought up to me after I had someone dm me crying over their doctors appointment. Despite loosing inches and gaining muscle, her weight was actually heavier and her doctor told her that her BMI was “overweight”. Physically she was so upset because she never felt better and all that confidence came smashing down after one appointment.
After sharing this story on Instagram I had hundreds more dms from more people with similar traumatizing experiences. That’s when I knew we had a problem.
BMI is a system that calculates one’s weight to their height and classifies if you are healthy, overweight or obese. (Note, no there is no underweight category) It was invented in the 1800s by a man who was not even a doctor. He was a sociologist. The study was conducted on only white European men. And yet….doctors still use this system today. Not only is it extremely out dated, but the BMI system is racist and does not reflect the health goals of individuals today. (I.e gaining muscle, bone density, genetics etc). According to BMI I as a 5,2 woman weighing 136lbs am considered overweight.
I’m over this system and I’m ready to fight back. Hopefully we can share this message and give people confidence at their next doctors appointment. So help spread the word and show everyone that BMI is BULLSHIT.
